Early Adoption Program

First Round Early Adoption Program

We would like to thank you for the tremendous feedback that we have received from the community in response to our first BDP-83 Blu-ray player notification update. There were many great comments, suggestions and concerns which we will try to address in the release of the BDP-83. In particular, we would like to address the Early Adoption Program.

We have decided to take a democratic, by-the-people approach to the implementation of the Early Adoption Program. For the initial batch we have randomly chosen 50 customers to participate in the Early Adoption Program. These 50 customers have the opportunity to purchase the BDP-83 before the official release. After using the player for about a week, they will be required to vote on whether the program should be expanded or suspended based on end-user experiences. If a supermajority (at least 70%) votes in favor of expanding the program, we will expand the Early Adoption Program by another 100 randomly chosen customers. The player will be shipped with a pre-production firmware version. Firmware updates will be available from time to time.

Answers for most commonly asked questions can be found in the discussions on AVS Forum, which many Early Adoption Customers actively participate. OPPO Digital appreciates the hospitality of AVS Forum for enabling the discussion about the BDP-83.

Bruce of Atkinson, NH    Yes    I believe we need 100 more units to test .You will be able see more reaction to some of the small problems. I love this player.
Daniel of Minneapolis, MN    Yes    A couple issues with things like DTS-MA but more then ready to move on to the next phase of testing.
Ioan of Middle Village, NY    Yes    I definetly advice that OPPO should extend the Early Adoption Program.
Joseph of Lincoln City, OR    Yes    This is an incredible product. For the past couple weeks, I've been using it exclusively for all our disc media playback - CD's, DVD's, Blu-ray, and SACD's - as well as digital music from a portable hard drive and small memory "thumb-drives" connected to the USB port. All have performed flawlessly. Multi-channel SACD's, something I've not experienced in my theater before, were particularly impressive. I suppose if I had to name any limitation in the BDP-83, it would be the apparent lack of DVD-A support - However, that is another disc-type I've never purchased before, so it's not really a disappointment as much as a casual observation.
Nicolas of Huntersville, NC    Yes    This player is more refined than any other Blu-Ray player I've owned. And the support SACD, and hopefully DVD-A in the future, means I can replace my universal DVD player and save on rack space. The quality of this player is top notch and I'm sure others will agree.
Willie of Marietta, GA    Yes    This unit is more than stable enough to extend the EAP to the next 100. I’ve bought FINAL production players from several other manufacturers and none of them was as stable as the Oppo BDP-83 is in its current state. The more hands on the deck; the better the FINAL product.
Rick of Granite Bay, CA    Yes    Although there are minor issues that I found, and subsequently brought to the attention to the folks at Oppo and knowing that those issues are being addressed, the BDP-83 is very close to it's official release. We will all benefit with 100 more EAPers.
VICTOR of San Diego, CA    Yes    It performs well in the areas of my interest (DVD upscaling and HD analog output) and general operations are very smooth.
Ankush of Issaquah, WA    Yes
Michael of Union City, NJ    Yes    This is an excellent player the way it stands in its current state with a few minor fixes needed. I feel this player is ready to be expanded to an additional 100 users.
Daniel of Endicott, NY    Yes    I personally have had no problems with the unit and Oppo has delivered what I expected.
Irvin of Kewanee, IL    Abstained
Scott of Lakewood, CA    Yes    I resounding vote "Yes" to expand the EAP. I have had virtually no issues with the player. The only glitch was a split second bitstream drop out of DTS-HD at the beginning of Top Gun that I could not replicate...Yes, Yes, Yes, let others enjoy this amazing piece of art!
Simon of New York, NY    Yes    Picture and sound quality is first rate and ease of use (including the speed at which it loads bluray discs) is the best I've seen. I'm using this player primarily iin 'source direct' mode and it strikes me as the current best-in-class transport available
Michael of Pasadena, CA    Yes    I think this is a terrific product. Terrifc picture/sound quality, quick loading, great DVD upsampling, very full feature set. I’m really enjoying it!
Bradford of Whitewater, WI    Yes    I am blown away. Only a couple little glitches. YES, YES, let another hundred help ferret out the glitches and get this player released to the public. Terriffic!!!
Brian of Murrieta, CA    Yes    Player is solid although there are some minor issues I will detail in a following email, I am sure can be solved via firmware updates.
John of West Lafayette, IN    Yes    Excellent player, performed flawlessly with BDs and DVDs via Denon 2809 AVR and VP50-pro video processor to Sony VW50 projector.
Vuthy of Ontario, CA    Yes    Great picture and great DVD upscaler compare to Denon 2500BTCL.
Daniel of Mead, WA    Yes    I would vote yes, since this player seems more mature than the player I am replacing. I really enjoy the fast load speed of BD discs, and source direct. I have yet to identify any glitches in my tests so far. Glad to help out, and this will definitely stay in my home theater. I use it with a Lumagen Radiance, Sony Black Pearl, 130” wide SMX promaskcurve, Meridian 861v4 w/ modded CLUX for HDMI audio, McIntosh MC207 amp, B&W 800 Diamond series speakers.
Douglas of Oneida, NY    Yes    This player is fantastic! Blu-Ray playback is excellent and Standard DVD playback is as good as your standalone player(s). I have had virtually no problems. Menu and disc load times are much better than my current Blu-Ray player. If I had to complain about something, it would be playback of different video files/codecs from a thumb drive. I believe releasing more units to early adopters will help iron out any lingering bugs.
Michael of Cincinnati, OH    Yes    I bought this player with a completely open mind and really took it to the test as much as I can for movies and music. I can say that I'm extremely happy with the unit. I'm extra thrilled that it performs so well from an audio standpoint. From a video standpoint, it is easily the best DVD upconversion I've seen.
Scott of Middlebury, VT    Yes    While there are a few bugs lingering that I feel prevent an official release, OPPO is aware of them and working on them. In the meantime, I have found no reason to not let 100 more people willing to accept this as a "work in-progress" hammer on it and provide OPPO even more feedback. It is a great, beautiful, easy-to-use player that makes both BDs and DVDs look spectacular. More eyes will make this an even better player even faster. I look forward to the firmware updates.
James of Seattle, WA    Yes    OPPO should extend the Early Adoption Program. Any issues I had were resolved or are minor. Excellent customer service. No reason not to extend EAP.
stephen of box elder, SD    Yes    This player rocks! With the help of 100 more people you will have the best player money can buy.
Jeffrey of Kenmore, NY    Yes    Outside of the (known) audio drop-out issue with dts-HD, this player has been an absolute joy to use and test. SD-DVD up-conversion comes close to looking like HD, Blu-Ray load times are very short, audio quality with CDs and SACDS is excellent and menus are intuitive and allow more customization than I have ever seen in a player. The manual is thorough, clear, and bordering on "enjoyable to read". This product has energized my love of cinema more than anything since the introduction of DVD as a format.
Terrence of Tooele, UT    Yes    I've had only positive experiences so far and a larger and more varied sample should be able to ferret out the bugs in your pre-production unit. This is my 4th blu-ray player and the best out of the box so far.
Michael of Huntington Beach, CA    Yes    The Oppo player should be expanded to more users, while a few minor bugs are to coming be expected, this is a dynamite player.
James of Old Forge, PA    Yes    Reason being having another 100 people out there testing it will deff help for when it hits the market. Hopefully this will help to weed out as many minor bugs as possible. The only real prob I had thus far has been the downmix bug which you are aware of. Hopefully a FW fix will be available soon. Great job.
Martin of New York, NY    Yes    It is functioning well and any firmware upgrades will be handled promptly by OPPO, since you have become well known for service, I have no reason to think it will be otherwise for the BDP-83.
Harold of Palm Bay, FL    Yes    The only issues I found were a sluggish remote and the lack of test tones for the Multi Chan Analog outs, which I feel that Oppo will address in future firmware releases,. Besides that, this player has been a joy to use in every respect.
James of Chicago, IL    Yes    The greatest appeal to me is the sound processing/options, as now I don't have to purchase a new AVR to take advantage of high-definition Blu-Ray audio. Overall, the audio has been superb (I'm hearing new things on old CDs!), digital zoom for older DVDs is amazing, and I have yet to try a video file that the machine doesn't handle.
Matthew of Merrimack, NH    Yes    The BDP-83 is a joy to use. Picture and sound quality are excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend this player to anyone. Disc load times are not that much longer than my 980H. Another 100 users will help to find any lingering bugs. Looking forward to DVD-A becoming available.
Antoine of Waxhaw, NC    Yes    This is my first time using any of the Oppo products and I have been very impressed with the BDP-83 and the customer support that I have recieved when contacting the company. There are a few little things that need working out but I am confident a firmware update will take care of with a little more testing thru the EAP.
John of Lebanon, OR    Yes    The player is very nice with only one problem so far – the volume sometimes goes silent during blu-ray play, but starts back up almost right away. I have the player set to Source Direct to allow my receiver to decode to 1080p, Dolby True HD, DTS Master Audio etc, though I did not see any difference when I let the player do these things. Shows that the player does the job as well as my receiver (Yamaha RX V3900). The blu-ray picture is very clear, though this depends on the particular blu-ray disc playing. The standard DVD up conversion is about the same as my OPPO Digital 980H and the SACD playback works well, about the same as the 980H.
John of scottsdale, AZ    Yes    This is a superb Blu-Ray player – with excellent picture and sound quality. It’s well-built and looks great, too. I didn’t experience any glitches during movie viewing, and more EAP users should be helpful to your refinement process.
Donovan of Windham, NH    Yes    The BDP-83 has exceeded my expectations and I haven't experienced any issues at this time.
Anthony of Houston, TX    Yes    Yes, I think Oppo should extend the Early Adoption Program to another 100 customers. I only had one minor glitch which was I couldn't get picture from the HDMI on the initial setup and had to use the composite connection which I'm glad you included in the box. Once I went through the initial setup, everything went well. Picture quality and sound is amazing. Disc loadup times is also very fast. I have a Panasonic BD-10 to compare it to and the Oppo blows the Panasonic away.
David of San Mateo, CA    Yes    There are a few changes I'd like to see made (e.g. logo size reduction or elimination during SACD playback), but it would definitely be beneficial to release the player to a wider audience.
Johnnie of Gaithersburg, MD    Yes    The BDP-83 performance thus far has easily dwarfed the performance of any Blu Ray player I have seen or owned to date. My tests haven’t been as thorough as I would like, but so far I have been able to run about 20 titles, and a few SACDs with no issues. The BDP-83 is truly setting the new standard on what Blu Ray player should be. This is definitely readily for more early adopters!
Michael of Malibu, CA    Yes    I can think of no reason not to allow another 100 customers access to your BDP-83. The larger the sample the greater the input.
Marshall of Mendham, NJ    Yes    Video and audio quality exceeded my expectations. Recommend releasing product to next EAP group.
Joseph of Fresno, CA    Yes    I’m extremely pleased with this player, aside from the already mentioned lack of DVD-Audio support and minor bugs. Setup was really simple and the included setup disc was a bonus. The supplied HDMI and power cables appear very high quality but I wish the power cable were a bit longer. I also found the remote to be excellent in layout and features. Both video and audio output are top notch. Overall, this unit is sure to become a hit based on its quality, features and price point. Definitely, extend the EAP to the next 100!
Mchael of danbury, CT    Yes    The player works great. It has fantastic picture and sound. Operates very smoothly and quietly.
Christen of Huntington Beach, CA    Yes    Picture and audio are fantastic. The player loads discs quickly and plays a variety of discs. The only problem I experienced was that all my user settings were deleted once after I turned it off. It hasn’t happened since.
Glen of La Plata, NM    Yes    The BDP-83 is my first Hi-Def disc player as I have waited out the format war and waited for the new Hi-def audio. I am enjoying the great picture via my Marantz VP1253 720P DLP projector both on upscaled DVDs and Blu-Ray discs. I love the remote and the user manual is well written. Of special interest to me is the analog stereo output as I have an older Sony E9000ES PRE/PRO, a Spectral DMC-20 analog pre amp, and Spectral amp in my system. My system is now complete as is and upgradeable in the future. I am now enjoying Blu-Rays, HDCDs, SACDs, and DVDs all from one great deck.
Jacob of Fillmore, NY    Yes    While I cannot say the BDP-83 is without flaws it is still more complete than some other BD players that have been released to the market. So far I have only had problems playing one disc . Aside from that, there are a couple missing features such as being able to switch SACD layers without entering the setup, but being able to switch layers with the audio button on the remote and DVD-A will be implemented with a (hopefully soon) firmware update. I have been very impressed with the sound quality when using the dedicated stereo analog outputs to my receiver. I have not had the opportunity to A/B the BDP-83 to my good CDP in my office yet, but I have a feeling the Oppo will not be outclassed, which says a lot considering the price and features the BDP-83 offers. The more feedback Oppo gets the easier it will be to fix the few remaining bugs and offer a few tweaks to the player before release. As it stands today with the current firmware I would still recommend the BDP-83 over my other BD player.
Michael of King of Prussia, PA    Yes    You would have to pry this player from my cold, dead hands. I'm sure the next 100 EAPers will feel the same way.
John of Costa Mesa, CA    Abstained
William of Lee's Summit, MO    Yes    The player does seem to be relatively stable. I believe that the more eyes we have on the player, the sooner it will be available to all who are eagerly awaiting it's release.
